Microsoft video file? how do i make it .avi or .wmv?

when i uploaded my videos from my digital camera to the computer, the video file comes up as "microsoft video file". i'm trying to upload them on youtube and edit it in movie maker but it doesn't work. do i need to convert it to .avi or .wmv? and how??? thanks!
