is there a way to download all of Microsoft's updates to my HD and then install them separately from that HD? I know it sounds like a weird question, but I'm just curious. It'll make things go a lot easier when i have to redo computers for my work.

There is an OPK (OEM Preinstallation kit) available to system builders to set up a "standard" XP or Vista PC with all available Microsoft updates, even if the OS has not been activated. This may not be what you are looking for.
If you don't want to use Microsoft Update, which automatically decides what to download to your computer, you can also try to find the patches and service packs individually, save the on disk, and apply as needed. That is more the "TechNet" way to do things.
Besides scheduling downloads and installs, Msft Update also verifies that your computer is in the right state to accept an update. This gets more and more common with Vista. A Microsoft Update Vista SP1 is safer and much smaller than the full download package.
In the somewhat distant past, Microsoft used to make CD images available with a large number of patches on it. This seems to be less common now.
Another approach to distribute updates many times while only downloading them once is Windows Software Update Services (WSUS). See the link below. This requires a W2003/2008 server, which not everyone has at home or at work.
