Is it possible to hook a microphone up to my computer and for the words i say to go into microsoft word?

if you don't want to but the software, then your out of luck because on vista, there is a tool called Microsoft Speech Recognition...

it's still not fully developed, and it can only do commands

there is software called Dragon Naturally Speaking

its great but its really costly

also, it requires you to have a costly microphone

and a quality sound card installed on your computer

No, you need voice recognition software to be able to do that. But it will type whatever you say with a bit of training, in Word or elsewhere. Should run you about $100.
