Since this is required for school, see if you can buy it through your school with an educational discount. Many colleges and universities have agreements with Microsoft and other software publishers that allow them to sell software to their students. My university, for example, has Microsoft Office for $20 for students. Check with your teacher, the IT department or campus bookstore to see if your school offers this.

If you insist on a Microsoft product, and if money is a concern, do you absolutely need Office 2003 or 2007?

If not, earlier versions of Office are much cheaper and will most likely do anything you need.

I have both Office 97 (a 1997 version of Office) and Office XP (a 2000 version of Office), and I cannot tell the difference for all the applications I use them for.

I know that each newer version of Office offers "something" to make it attractive to customers, but in my opinion most of it is either "bells and whistles" that I don't need and won't use, or is a less user-friendly "improvement".

So, look for an earlier version of Office. Might save you a few bucks. Or better yet, try one of the free clones of Office. I have not tried them, but they might do everything you need.
Open Office.org is a good free open source program. it will read Microsoft Office documents

Use OpenOffice.

Using Microsoft Office, you can not find "Genuine" cheap ones. Rule of thumb, if it is too good to be true, it probably is
