Microsoft word numbering is driving me crazy???

I am trying to write a report at the moment and the numbering on Microsoft Word 2003 is driving me mad!!!!!!



I want to get something like this



1.



1.1



1.2



1.3



1.4



1.5



2.



1.1



1.2



(This is where its not working, I want to continue the numbering like 2.1, 2.2......... but it wont let me ive tried format%26gt; bullets and numbering and then customizing but every time i change it to say 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 it changes all the 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 numbers to 2.1, 2.2, 2.3........)



hope ive been clear enough, please help because i need to present my report like this and because its not working its brought me to a halt lol

i know... it's a pain. As far as I can remember to get 1.1 under the number 1 you have to indent it. Then for everything after that indent. The number 2 will then be unindented.

It seems to me that you want 2.1, 2.2 but you're doing something that's changing the numbers under 1. also.



It sounds like you want Outline Numbering (different tab on the same Bullets and Numbering dialog box), which should do what you want automatically. For each sub-number set, press the Tab key as the first character on the line and it will automatically indent and renumber. To go back one level, press Shift/Tab instead.



Hope that helps.
The easiest option would be to turn off the autonumbering/bullets and do the numbers manually.
